FashionABLE project has been created to platform diversity and inclusion, as well as integrity, where people from all walks of life have been and are encouraged to participate and celebrate all the different abilities and/or disabilities, shapes and sizes, cultures and ages..
THE IDEA was born in November 2015 when director of LocalMotive Markets, Tania Pramschufer, was eager to create an event with most positive and impactful attributes that would promote and platform inclusion, diversity and integrity, as well attract more people to the Waverley Station Market that was running close to the Platform 2 then. Given the ideal space, flooded with natural light, due to the glass roof structure, and several exhibitors selling fashion items – an idea to have a fashion show there seemed most relevant and exciting.
INSPIRED Tania knew exactly who to contact. Stacy Paris was known to Tania since she was twelve and now following two below the knee amputations due to sepsis, Stacy was involved with Models of Diversity, a charity that provides platforms for people with disabilities around the globe on main stream catwalks such as New York and Paris, London. The other person Raygan Bold, a young adult and a student at UpMo, a charity that works to support people with physical and mental health issues - interested in fashion as well modelling and had already like Stacy had some experience, as well as the passion for fashion. Through a conversation with Stacy, the name fashionABLE was born, the event would be all about inclusion, diversity as well the fashion with integrity.
The first show took place in September 2016 and was showcasing Scottish, Asian and African fashion. Kathy Lai and Arely Martinez were two main organisers of the 1st show. Kathy was an event graduate student, over from Taiwan looking for experience. Arely was volunteering her time to help with the marker, also an event student graduate. Arely, being also an incredible artist, designed first two catwalks for the event. Both created a wonderful dynamic to the show, including cultural inclusion.
The second event, in May 2017, on the eve of the World Fair Trade Day was created to primarily launch World Fair Trade Tartan, with President WFTO Rudi Dalvai in attendance, but had other Fair Trade collections, as well Upcycled/Recycled collections and Scottish collections represented. Second show was co-organised with Tania Pramschufer and Olya Arren who has been working with Tania at Hand Up Events and Localmotive Markets since 2016, though a volunteer earlier (in 2014) and has also a graduate degree in events.
After two successful events both held in a Edinburgh Waverley Station, third fashionABLE fashion show took place in the iconic Scottish Parliament, that was chosen to raise awareness and celebrate Year or Youth. Participating in this non for profit event provided young people, including those young at heart, with something very positive and empowering to be involved in. FashionABLE supporting education, acceptance and equality, had put the young people at the heart of it all. The focus, as for previous shows, was on the integrity of the fashion, and in 2018 young people also had an opportunity to have hands on experience in making parts of the fashion. Young people were introduced to established designers through fashion making workshops where they had a chance to learn new skills and/or improve existing. As well, young people were fully ingrained in the entire project, from the initial planning stages to the very delivery of the event -with all its aspects on the day (organising team, runway and decoration team, music & dance team, and/or modelling etc.).
Last year we wanted to take a different approach and focus and take more time on the confidence building, as opposed to the fashion show being the end product - so we organised the sessions for people from all walks of life to feel confident, empowered and happy with themselves. The modelling workshops, also including mini portfolio building took place at the Ocean Terminal, that is so much more than a shopping centre – offering a unique shopping experience at Edinburgh's waterfront, with great mix of retail, leisure, health and dining options! Ocean Terminal kindly supported and funded the project, and with industry experts Models of Diversity’s CEO Angel Sinclair and professional photographer James Alexander Lyon, the participants were able to learn new skills or develop the existing, as well get the images from their modelling and confidence workshops.
